So far, this year has been so rough on Mormons like me I am about ready to turn Jewish ( I do speak a little Yiddish and there are cultural similarities). Mitt Romney is to blame. Mostly. To be clear, about the only thing I don't like about Mitt is his political party. Long ago figured that in his heart of hearts he was a Rockefeller Republican, like his late father George was. That's what Mitt had been 1994 when he took on Senator Edward Kennedy and lost, and in 2002 when he was elected governor of Massachusetts. I figured his fairly sudden and sharp hard right turn on some social issues was an expedient if temporary gambit to win support from the Christian extremists. I thought it was a very risky decision. Historically, Southern Baptists and other evangelicals have been unabashedly contemptuous of Mormons like Mitt. One of them, with help from a few collaborators, had murdered Mitt’s and my great-great grandfather. Some were just beginning to appreciate Romney's earnest religiosity, when Governor Mike Huckabee, a Baptist preacher and presidential candidate himself, informed the world that Mitt and his fellow travelers were just a crazy bunch of devil worshipers. Then Mike colluded with Senator John McCain in the West Virginia, leading Mitt to conclude rather abruptly that he would rather quit than mount a floor fight at the convention. His unwillingness to fight hard is what led to his defeat in 1994. I am beginning to wonder if kindness and eagerness to make peace are Mitt's Achilles Heel. Perhaps they are Mormon things too. I dunno. Perhaps I was separated at birth from my legitimate Jewish or Anglican parents.
