He had been raised a Republican, but in the summer of 1968 a young journalist registered as a Democrat and soon found himself deeply immersed in a last-ditch attempt to thwart strong-armed efforts of party insiders to derail the candidacy of the popular anti-establishment candidate, Senator Eugene McCarthy. Although the effort failed, it yielded revealing evidence that the party was beginning to lose touch with America's heartland.
